about

Jackie Coleman (1928-2001) was a well-known flute player and composer of a number of tunes, who lived most of life in Knocknahoo, Gurteen, Co. Sligo. This tune was learned from a field recording of Jackie Coleman kindly loaned by Daithí Gormley. The tune which follows appears in O’Neill’s The Dance Music of Ireland, referencing a Chicago mayor whose reign coincided with the era of Captain Francis O’Neill’s tune collecting in the Chicago area. The tune first came to my attention in the late 1980s through the West Clare fiddlers John Kelly, Bobby Casey, Joe Ryan at the Willie Clancy Summer School.
